  • Canadian Blood Services Responds to Possible New Blood Safety Threat

    Last fall, a report was published in the medical literature which suggested that there was an association between chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) and the presence of a virus called xenotropic murine leukemia virus-related virus (XMRV). It was found that there was not only evidence of this virus in blood samples from American CFS patients but it was much more common than in samples from healthy individuals (67 per cent in CFS patients versus four per cent in healthy Americans).

    AUSTRALIA'S Red Cross Blood Service is reviewing its donation guidelines following Canada's move to halt donations from people who have ever had chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). Canadian authorities took the precautionary step earlier this month, based on US research that linked CFS to a recently identified virus (XMRV) which would be transmissible via infected blood.

    GENDRINGEN, 20100416 -- Onderzoekers van het UMC St. Radboud maakten in februari bekend in het bloed van Nederlandse patiënten met het chronisch vermoeidheidssyndroom (ME/CVS) geen XMRV-virus te hebben aangetroffen. Ze verzwegen echter dat Amerikaanse onderzoekers in bloedstalen van dezelfde patiënten wél sporen vonden van dit retrovirus.
